Research Projects
February 16, 2009 Update River Springs Charter School is in the process of conducting a research project to determine the effects of physical education on learning mathematics. The concept of increased physical fitness increasing academic achievement has been proven. However, that proof was in a traditional school setting and was not targeted at mathematics. Our thanks go out those students and families who have volunteered to participate in this interesting project. Participating families have committed to participate and accomplish the following research activities:
- Participate in a pre-fitness assessment (most students have completed this portion)
- Complete, using Scantron, the math assessment (most students have completed this portion)
- Sign and return a permission form(see attached)
- Complete weekly exercises proved by the Health and Fitness coordinator
- 6-7 weeks after starting the program participate in a mid-assessment fitness test
- 12-13 weeks after beginning the program participate in a post fitness test
- 12-13 weeks after beginning the program take the math assessment using Scantron
Please visit this web page for updates as well as any reports of research results. Names will not be included in any web posts or reports and personal results are strictly confidential. The research report will focus on growth in physical fitness and mathematics using recorded numbers. Any anecdotal information included in the report will identify participants as “Student A1” and “Parent A” in order to collectively tie families together. Should you be interested in participating or assisting with the school’s continual focus on increasing the health and fitness of all students, please don’t hesitate to contact our Health and Fitness Coordinator, Murray Webb, at
